I am now the proud parent to broccoli and brussel sprout shoots! Oh my I am so relieved and completely shocked that I did it. My new little babes seem to be thriving in their re-purposed egg containers...woo hoo success!
....Although I am knocking on wood while saying this. They still need a few more weeks of babying before I can transplant them to the bed. That reminds me, I better get working on that bed so they have somewhere to grow, if only this weather would cooperate a little better. Well I guess, I'm not a galoshes wearing gardener for nothing, thank you Seattle Spring rain!
My Sprouts are now about 2 days old. I was actually sick in bed with stomach flu when they sprouted so I missed the actual day. They're measuring around 1-2in tall and are looking great, I just hope they are not leggy? Not sure when you know or what you can do about it, so I'll be keeping an eye out for that.
Next....
- I'll be sowing more broccoli this week so that I will have a staggered harvest season and my celery will be due to shoot any day now. Tomatoes should be next week...Happy seeding everyone!!
Hurray for you! I've been using egg cartons, too. I obsessively check for seedlings all the time.
ReplyDeleteThis is exciting..sorry to hear you are sick :( My seedlings are featured proudly in my post this week....I keep mine from being leggy by using grow lights...mine need to be transplanted into other posts and placed outside to harden off soon (flowers)...I am starting more flowers and a few more herbs this weekend...all my early veggies are outside already planted under cover. Tomatoes and peppers will be started soon inside. Feel better!
ReplyDeleteyou probably need to put a fan on them at low speed.
ReplyDeleteCongrats! I hope they keep on growing for you! It's so exciting to start from seed. I hope you feel better! Cheers, Jenni
ReplyDeleteI transplanted my radishes and romaine last weekend. My beans have gone insane and need to be transplanted, but I ran out of potting soil!! Ack! lol Nothing has happened with my spinach, which is rather disappointing. I should have my first radish harvest in about two weeks! Can you believe it??
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear that you have been sick. It is exciting every time we get sprouts isn't it. Makes our gardener hearts just pitty pat. Get better soon.
ReplyDeleteI have lots of seeds sprouting! And more to plant!
ReplyDeleteThis has been a discouraging spring here in the Northwest but it's bound to give way eventually, and you will be ready with bunches of plants for your veggie garden!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! I have some spinach and cucumber sprouts that I transplanted to the veggie garden. My broccoli and brussel sprouts began to bolt, so I had to remove them. We had been eating from them since last fall. I bought some tomato plants and put them in the garden. They are doing well, and I hope to have tomatoes by summer. I hope you have a fruitful harvest!
ReplyDeleteThat's so exciting to see seeds sprout. We do most of our veggie gardening in the winter when it is cooler, but I am growing Basil and Parsley from seed. The Basil has its first set of real leaves and the Parsley which takes three weeks to sprout is just up.
ReplyDeleteFresh Pesto is a favorite around here.
Glad to hear you are feeling better now.
Cucumbers looking good; sunflowers definitely leggy; my old standby zinnias oddly reluctant; amaranth newly thinned; gardener obsessively checking, petting and misting, waiting impatiently for others to show themselves. glad your babies are having theraputic effects: be well.
ReplyDeleteThat's exciting! I hope you're feeling better--stomach flu is no fun, especially this time of year. You'll have to keep us posted on your seedlings' progress as the growing season continues.
