Fluttering feathers & sing-a-longs...

There is something so comforting about the tweet of a little chickadee while out weeding the flower garden. It really is one of my favorite, simple joys of gardening!
My star singer!
This time of year not only brings the life back to my sleeping garden beds, but also brings the birds and other wildlife out to visit once again!
I have to say, the plants in my garden are only half the joy, the other love has to be the birds that flutter around, I really can't get enough of them. They help distract me from what I'm doing, to remind me to look up and to soak in all that is around, to put the tools down and admire through all of the senses...a welcome break of appreciation!

The birdbath is now cleaned, the feeders filled with fresh seed and the birdhouses are occupied! Once again my feathered friends are singing a happy song.

As a lover of the outdoors, I feel it my responsibility to take care of these special guests to the best of my ability, they grace me with their company and song. Their love of bugs, help with the creepy crawlies that eat my plants. I like to return the favor by trying to keep as pesticide and predator free of an environment for them that I can...Thank you birds for all that you bring to my yard, they really are my little helpers!

Here are some of my favorite backyard friends...
Black capped Chickadee
Stellar's Jay
Northern Flicker
Rufous Hummingbird
Here are some great tips for capturing your garden guests...

Excellent site for real indepth look at Northwest birds...

  1. Wonderful post! My husband is constantly filling the feeders around here.

  2. I love the little chickadees too! :)

  3. Love your pictures! These (except for the chickadee) were different birds than we have around here - loved seeing them!

  4. That Stellar's jay looks too glorious to be real ;~)

  5. I agree with you about hearing the birds while working outside. They kept us company all weekend, even as it was getting dark they kept chirping away. Great pictures of your visitors!

  6. Wonderful captures! I agree with you and Catherine . . . birdsongs add a joyful dimension to the garden.

  7. Hi Julia, You have some really wonderful bird captures here. The Northern Flicker reminds me of Polkadotgaloshes! :)

  8. Thanks for all the wonderful comments, I LOVE taking bird pics, I really find it hard to get work done when they are around...lol!
One - I love it, polka dot birds ;)

  9. Birds do add so much enjoyment...they can be quite a distraction when trying to get work done but it seems a little break to watch them always refreshes! Great captures Julia!

  10. I have never seen the Stellar's Jay or the Northern Flicker. They are beautiful birds. Your photos of them are really superb..

  11. Julia, well I finally made it here. How is it that I wasn't a follower yet, fixed that now...so I got a little side tracked, sigh. Too many good things to look at.

Anyways re the watermark, I am just using Picassa at this moment to make it. I did make one in PSE but the silly thing is lost in cyberspace somewhere. I guess I forgot to save it.

I like the look of it, simple, clean, but still "me".

    Loving your blog.

  12. I love the birdsongs, too. And the Black-capped Chickadee is so cute. Very nice post, photos, and blog design. I'm glad I found your blog!

Cat - Coming from you that means a lot! Your photos are stunning! Thank you =)
GWGT - Thank you, the Stellar Jay's are a treat!
Jen - I am so happy to see you here!! Thanks for following and for the tip on the water mark...xx
PlantPostings - I'm glad you found it too ;)

  14. We also love the garden birds visiting, your pictures are fantastic. The Chickadee looks almost identical to our coaltit.

  15. Great post - the chickadees are what get us through our snowy winter! Thanks for the link to the photography tips - that's awesome!

  16. They are all so beautiful and the photos are great. We also have some share of birds although different from those in the temperate climes, but i still am not successful in getting good shots of them. I dont have favorable lenses for their beautiful capture, but yes their music are really wonderful while gardening.

  17. Fabulous birds and such a variety...love the Stellar

  18. Those are stunning captures, they took my breath away! Hearing the birds as the sun rises from inside the house, we are drawn outside to see our friends. Nothing is as beautiful as that sound as light illuminates the world.

  19. I love the Northern Flicker - too beautiful!

  20. What a lot of feathered friends you have in your garden! That Stellar Jay is such a lovely blue.
I love seeing birds in my garden too and when summer comes around they all land up here because my garden has the only birdbath for quite a distance.
I love what you're doing for the birds!

  21. Love the bird photos and you do an excellent job of capturing them.
