Earth Hour 2012

Earth Hour 2012 - Dare the World to Save the Planet and this year for the first time I am not being reminded of it the day after and missing it all together!

What is it all about....
Switch off your lights for 1hr on Saturday 31 March at 8:30pm (Yes people that is TONIGHT!) to be part of the world's largest voluntary action for the environment, sounds pretty great!
Earth Hours Mission is to send a universal message of hope and action to protect the one thing that unites us all – the planet. Together our actions add up.
Share the positive action you will take for the planet beyond the hour. Most people go a few days without power or use less water, which are all great things to do, but I have an autistic child to think about too and that would just spin him out.
  • My on going pledge for the month of April is to...Buy nothing new! (except for groceries/hygiene needs) I have a passion for salvage and keeping usable items out of landfills. Anything we need, things I would normally go buy new, we will be re-purposing and salvaging, also thrift-store finds, hand-me-downs or borrowed! Time to get creative!!

Are you participating this year? What are you going with-out?

    1. Way to go Donna! I'll have to pop over for a visit of your seeds, I'm trying it for the first time this year and am constantly looking for advice from those more experienced =) All the best with your seeding adventures...cheers Julia xx

  2. Yes did the hour. And participate in years past. I too buy very little. I am NOT a shopper and hate to shop actually, so I have a tendency to live with stuff until it almost disintegrates. My only buying vices are tech, art and camera stuff. But even then, live with the same equipment for years. I doubt I could make a year without something new from that group though.

    1. Oh that would be hard! Those are true vices for me too..especially the camera stuff! But alas I have two young kiddo's who are constantly needing things, so this will be a good lesson for them too! Why buy new when there is a perfectly good pair of shoes at Goodwill that someone out grew! This should be a fun family lesson...appreciate the used! Hmmm a year, now you've got me thinking on a larger scale ;) Cheers Julia

  4. I like your pledge. Good luck with it! I have been trying to reduce my garbage. I try to compost everything I can, and what I can't, I make a mental note and try to figure out if I can do without it or substitute it in some way. Cooking from scratch and home-canned vegetables have helped a lot!

  5. Thanks Holley, I love your idea of reducing garbage! I'm feeling so inspired to use my compost better, I've been a little slack ;)

  6. We try to live this way every day, but there are times when we need something new. This is a great idea for April.
